According to the myth, Zeus created Nefeli, giving her the form of Hera, in order to deceive Ixion. However, Nefeli married King Athamas and bore him two children, Phrixus and Helle. The king, however, took a mortal woman, Ino, as his second wife. The children from his first marriage, Phrixus and Helle, became the objects of hatred from Ino, who wanted to see her own sons, Learchus and Melicertes, on the throne. Nefeli returned to Mount Laphystium and demanded the death of Athamas. When the subjects refused, she punished the entire land with drought. Another version of the story suggests that Ino, the wicked stepmother of Nefeli's children, convinced the women of the land to secretly burn the seeds of the crops, leading to a failed harvest. Desperate, King Athamas sought the help of the Oracle of Delphi, but Ino bribed the messengers, claiming that to appease the gods, Phrixus must be sacrificed. At the last moment, Nefeli, their heavenly mother, sent a winged golden ram to the altar, saving her two children and carrying them away over the sea. Unfortunately, Helle fell into the waters and was lost, giving the sea at that point the name Hellespont. Phrixus, however, reached Colchis and sacrificed the ram to Zeus. Thus, Nefeli, the goddess of clouds in Greek mythology, emerges as an ethereal and enchanting figure in the celestial realm.
