If you are visiting Athens this March and looking for a unique local experience, the Piraeus Port Run is one of the most exciting sporting events taking place near the city.
Taking place on Sunday, March 15, the race invites runners and visitors to discover the vibrant port city of Piraeus through a scenic route along its beautiful waterfront. Participants can choose between three race distances: a 10 km race, a 5 km race, and a 1 km race for children, making the event accessible to runners of all ages and abilities.
The race begins and finishes near Korai Square, next to the historic Municipal Theatre of Piraeus. Along the way, runners pass some of the most picturesque areas of the city, including Piraiki, Marina Zeas and Pasalimani, enjoying spectacular sea views and the lively atmosphere of the port.
A Race in Memory of Christos Vartzákis
The Piraeus Port Run continues the tradition of the historic “Vartzakeios Race”, which was originally created to honor Christos Vartzákis, a legendary long-distance runner from Piraeus.
Born in 1911, Vartzákis became one of Greece’s most respected endurance runners, achieving major performances in long-distance events and even winning the Greek Marathon Championship later in his career.
Beyond his athletic achievements, he played an important role in promoting running culture in Greece and inspiring generations of athletes through his passion for sport and lifelong dedication to running.
