Semele, daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia, was the mother of Dionysus by Zeus. Zeus's wife, Hera discovered the affair when Semele was pregnant and confided in her that her husband was actually Zeus and planted seeds of doubt in Semele's mind. Curious, Semele demanded of Zeus that he reveal himself in all his glory as proof of his godhood. Though Zeus begged her not to ask this, she persisted and he agreed. Mortals, however, cannot look upon a god without dying, and she perished. Zeus rescued the fetal Dionysus by sewing him into his leg. This leads to his being called "the twice-born".

Koukaki district is known for both its day and night time flare. For a casual daytime or nighttime drink, ‘I Avli’ remains a real local hotspot. ‘I Avli’ café fills us with feelings of urban locality, vivid playfulness, and heartfelt friendliness in the hustle of the central pedestrian square of Koukaki. A hotspot for students and young people because of the good prices and casual atmosphere. They have delicious raki (strong alcoholic spirit), rakomelo (warm raki with honey), oinomelo (warm wine with honey), and a good selection of cocktails and homemade snacks. For something of a contrast, visit ‘Kimono’, a spacious, minimal, modern café located on the rooftop of Central Athens Hotel which offers quality coffee, sweets, and food with a stunning view. ‘Bel Rey’ is another option for a great brunch or snack and in the evening for some amazing and unusual cocktails. With a positive and cozy vibe, space is enriched with color, quirky design and an artsy feeling.
Once you feel the stomach rumble, head to ‘Riza Riza’, a lovely restaurant with cute interiors and cozy vibes. It is a nice spot for the young people of the neighborhood to hang out, have a great brunch of good size, and have a delicious dessert. ‘To Balcony Restaurant/bar’ is another great choice for an elegant and quiet romantic night out above the chaos of urban life in their classy rooftop restaurant. Their menu takes a sophisticated and creative take on traditional Greek cuisine complementing their list of drinks. ‘Mani Mani’, on the other hand, takes a flirtatious approach to various of the country’s recipes using traditional and healthy products from Mani and the Peloponnese. Their outcome: modern, amazing, authentic food with a twist! When the nighttime vibes kick in, head down to the little but fabulous ‘Tiki Bar’ next to the Acropolis Museum and let the happy and lively beats of Latin and Caribbean influences help you get your groove on. Another exotic and heartwarming bar is ‘Papadalup Coffee & Bar’. Their long list of drinks and a long list of different DJs keep the crowds coming throughout the week. While ‘Monsieur Barbu’ will take you time traveling to a different place with its old-school decoration, alternative food options, and good prices. It is a great spot for intimate drinks or a coffee date. For something casual ‘Materia Prima’ offers a relaxed and excellent wine experience with lounge beats in the center of Koukaki. A nice place for interesting conversations.
Whether the cobbled stones of Plaka, the graffiti of Psyri, the columns of the Acropolis, or the nightlife of Gazi, the property’s location will help you get to your favorite spots with convenience and ease.
